basic block
A run of instructions with one way in at the top and one way out at the bottom - no jumps into the middle, no jumps out except at the end.
A basic block is a maximal straight-line instruction sequence entered only at its first instruction and left only after its last; a function's control-flow graph connects its basic blocks by branches.
