binary32

The 32-bit IEEE format, used for C++ float - 1 sign bit, 8 exponent bits, 23 fraction bits.

binary32 has a 1-bit sign, an 8-bit biased exponent (bias 127) and a 23-bit fraction, giving 24 significant bits (about 7 decimal digits) and a largest finite value near 3.4 * 10^38.

Examples

  • 1.0f is 0x3F800000: sign 0, stored exponent 127, fraction 0.
