branch prediction
Guessing which way a branch will go, and where, before it is worked out, so the pipeline can keep fetching instead of waiting.
Branch prediction is the front end's guess of a branch's direction (taken or not taken) and target at fetch time; execution later checks the guess and flushes the wrong-path instructions if it was wrong.
