calling convention
The agreed rules for how one function calls another - where the inputs go, where the result comes back, which registers each side may change.
A calling convention specifies how arguments are passed, how results are returned and which registers a called function must leave unchanged; it is fixed per platform and differs between operating systems on the same instruction set.
