compulsory miss
A miss on the very first use of a line: it was never in the cache, so no cache size or layout could have avoided it.
A compulsory (cold) miss is the first reference to a block; it would miss even in an infinite cache. Only larger lines or prefetching reduce compulsory misses.
Examples
The first access to any line is a compulsory miss, however big the cache.
