data model

Which sizes a platform gives to int and long; why long is 64 bits on Linux and macOS but 32 bits on Windows.

A C/C++ data model fixes the sizes of int, long and pointers; 64-bit Linux and macOS use LP64, 64-bit Windows uses LLP64.

Examples

  • On Linux and macOS a long is 8 bytes; on Windows it is 4 bytes, and only long long is 8.
