direct-mapped cache
A cache in which each memory line has exactly one place it can go, picked by some bits of its address.
A direct-mapped cache has one line per set: the index field of the address selects the only slot a block may occupy, so two blocks with the same index evict each other even when the rest of the cache is empty.
