fixed-point number

A number stored as a whole number with an agreed scale, such as cents stored as an integer count of 1/100ths.

A fixed-point number stores x as the integer round(x * 2^f) (or x * 10^f) for a fixed number f of fraction digits, so arithmetic is integer arithmetic and the spacing between values is the same everywhere.

Examples

  • In 8.8 fixed point, 3.25 is stored as 3.25 × 256 = 832, which is 0x0340.
