Free public beta until December 4, 2026: every course is open, no card needed. After that, the first chapter of each course stays free and full access is a one-time $39 ($19 for up to 100 founding members chosen for helpful feedback). Your progress is kept. How the beta works

floating-point infinity

The special float value meaning "bigger than any number", produced by overflow or by dividing a nonzero number by zero.

+inf and -inf have an all-ones exponent field and a zero fraction; they result from overflow under round-to-nearest and from x / 0 for nonzero x, and arithmetic on them follows the limits of real arithmetic where defined.

Examples

  • +∞ in binary32 is 0x7F800000: an all-ones exponent and a zero fraction. 1.0 / 0.0 gives it.
