frame pointer

A register that points at a fixed spot in the current function's frame, so its contents are easy to find even while the stack pointer moves - rbp, x29 or s0.

The frame pointer (rbp on x86-64, x29 on ARM64, s0/fp on RISC-V) holds a fixed address in the current frame; saved frame pointers form a linked chain that debuggers walk, and optimized x86-64 code often omits it.
