hardware prefetcher
A part of the processor that spots a regular pattern of memory accesses and fetches the next lines into the cache before the program asks for them.
A hardware prefetcher detects access streams (next-line, constant-stride, sometimes more complex patterns) per cache level and issues fills ahead of demand; it cannot predict data-dependent addresses such as pointer chasing, and usually stops at page boundaries.
