intermediate representation
The compiler's own in-between language - simpler than C++, not tied to any one processor - where it does most optimization.
An intermediate representation is the program form between front end and back end; LLVM's is a typed, SSA-form instruction list over an unlimited supply of virtual registers, shared by every source language and target.
