load/store architecture
A design where only load and store instructions touch memory; arithmetic works on registers only. ARM64 and RISC-V work this way.
In a load/store architecture memory is accessed only by load and store instructions; computational instructions take register (and immediate) operands.
Examples
ARM64 adds a value in memory with three instructions,
ldr, add, str; x86-64 can do it with oneadd [rdi], rax.
