A small timing program that measures one routine in isolation, run many times to get a stable number.
A microbenchmark times a small piece of code in a loop under controlled conditions (warm-up, repetitions, a monotonic clock, a guard against the optimizer deleting the work) and reports a robust statistic such as the median.
