place value

The idea that a digit's worth depends on its position.

In base-b positional notation the digits d_{n-1}...d_0 represent the sum of d_i times b^i.

Examples

  • In 1011 the places are worth 8, 4, 2 and 1, so the value is 8 + 2 + 1 = 11.
