preemption
The operating system taking the processor away from a running program, without asking it, so another program can have a turn.
Preemption is the involuntary suspension of a running thread, typically when a timer interrupt shows its time slice has expired or a higher-priority thread became runnable; the thread resumes later exactly where it stopped.
