release store

A store that no earlier memory access of the same thread may move after; used to publish data by setting a flag last.

A release store (ARM64 stlr, RISC-V fence rw,w before the store or .rl, C++ memory_order_release) is ordered after all earlier loads and stores in program order; an acquire load that reads its value synchronizes with it, making those earlier writes visible. On x86-64 every ordinary store already has release semantics.

Examples

  • The writer fills data, then ready.store(true, std::memory_order_release).
