signaling NaN
A rarely used kind of NaN meant to raise an error the moment arithmetic touches it.
A signaling NaN has the most significant fraction bit clear (and some other fraction bit set); an arithmetic operation on it raises the invalid-operation exception and, by default, returns a quiet NaN.
