snooping
Each cache watching the requests other caches make, so it can hand over or throw away its own copy of a line when needed.
In a snooping protocol every cache observes coherence requests broadcast on a shared interconnect and responds for lines it holds; large chips instead use a directory (or snoop filter) that records which caches hold each line so requests go only there.
