symbol resolution

The linker's first job: matching every name a file uses but doesn't define with the one file that does define it.

Symbol resolution associates each undefined symbol reference with exactly one global definition among the linked object files and libraries; no definition is an undefined-symbol error, and two strong definitions are a duplicate-symbol error (ELF weak symbols and COMDAT or coalesced definitions are the sanctioned exceptions).
