temporal locality
The habit programs have of using the same data again soon, like a loop counter or a running total; a cache keeps recently used data for exactly this reason.
A reference stream has temporal locality when an address accessed now is likely to be accessed again in the near future; caches exploit it by retaining recently used lines.
Examples
A loop counter read on every pass stays in L1 for the whole loop.
