Free public beta until December 4, 2026: every course is open, no card needed. After that, the first chapter of each course stays free and full access is a one-time $39 ($19 for up to 100 founding members chosen for helpful feedback). Your progress is kept. How the beta works

critical point

A point in a function's domain where its derivative is zero or undefined — the only places extrema can occur.

A critical point of f is a value c in the domain of f where f'(c)=0 or f'(c) does not exist. By Fermat's theorem, every local extremum occurs at a critical point, though not every critical point is an extremum.

Examples

  • For f(x)=x^3-3x: f''(x)=3x^2-3=0 at x=\pm1, so x=\pm1 are critical points.
