Free public beta until December 4, 2026: every course is open, no card needed. After that, the first chapter of each course stays free and full access is a one-time $39 ($19 for up to 100 founding members chosen for helpful feedback). Your progress is kept. How the beta works

derivative

The instantaneous rate of change of a function — the slope of its tangent line at a point.

The derivative of f at x is f'(x) = \displaystyle\lim_{h\to0}\dfrac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}, when this limit exists. It gives the slope of the tangent line at x and the instantaneous rate of change of f there.

Examples

  • For f(x)=x^2, f''(x)=2x, so the slope of the tangent line at x=3 is 6.
