augmented matrix

A system's coefficient matrix with an extra column of constants tacked on, separated by a bar.

An augmented matrix represents a linear system by writing the coefficient matrix with an extra column holding the constant terms, set off by a vertical bar. Each row still represents one equation in full, constant included, so any row operation applied to a row must be applied to every entry in that row, the augmented column included.
