common ratio

The fixed factor each term of a geometric sequence is multiplied by to get the next one.

The common ratio r of a geometric sequence is the constant factor relating consecutive terms: r = \frac{a_n}{a_{n-1}} for every n\ge 2. A common ratio with |r|<1 produces a sequence shrinking toward zero; |r|>1 produces one growing without bound.
