conjugate axis
The perpendicular axis of a hyperbola that sets the height of its sketching box, without touching the curve.
The conjugate axis of a hyperbola is the segment through the center, perpendicular to the transverse axis, connecting the co-vertices (0,\pm b), with length 2b. It never touches the hyperbola itself — its only job is sizing the central box whose diagonals become the asymptotes.
