order of operations
The agreed sequence for evaluating an expression — parentheses, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract.
The Order of Operations Agreement fixes the sequence for evaluating an expression with more than one operation: grouping symbols first, then exponents, then multiplication and division (left to right, tied), then addition and subtraction (left to right, tied).
Examples
2+3\times4 = 2+12 = 14, never (2+3)\times4.
