long division
Dividing one polynomial by another the same way you divide numbers by hand.
Long division of polynomials divides f(x) by a divisor d(x) the same way whole-number long division works: divide the leading terms, multiply back, subtract, bring down, repeat — until the remainder's degree is less than d(x)'s. Result: f(x) = d(x) \cdot q(x) + r(x).
Examples
Dividing x^3 - 2x^2 - 5x + 6 by x - 3 gives quotient x^2 + x - 2 with remainder 0.
