3D Gaussian Splatting
An explicit scene representation using many overlapping 3D Gaussian blobs, rendered by fast splatting instead of ray-marching.
3D Gaussian Splatting represents a scene explicitly as a large collection of 3D Gaussian "blobs," each with a position, shape, color, and opacity, rendered into a novel view by projecting ("splatting") them directly onto the image plane rather than NeRF's per-ray network evaluation -- an explicit, point-based representation that trades NeRF's implicit continuity for much faster rendering.
Examples
A Gaussian Splatting scene renders in real time on a laptop by projecting thousands of colored blobs directly onto the screen, where an equivalent NeRF would need to evaluate a network per ray.
