pinhole camera model

The idealized camera model of light passing through a single point onto an image plane.

The pinhole camera model idealizes a camera as light rays passing through a single point (the center of projection) onto a flat image plane, with no lens at all. Every real lens camera is modeled as an approximate pinhole camera plus a distortion correction, since a real lens introduces deviations the pure pinhole model does not predict.

Examples

  • Every real camera lens is modeled as an idealized pinhole camera plus a distortion correction layered on top of it.
