hot path
The code that runs so often that its speed decides the speed of the whole program.
A hot path is code executed frequently enough to dominate run time or allocations; optimization effort belongs there and almost nowhere else.
Examples
The loop that prices every item in every cart at checkout, run thousands of times a minute.
