ordinal comparison

Comparing strings character code by character code, ignoring language rules.

An ordinal comparison compares the UTF-16 code units of two strings; StringComparison.Ordinal and OrdinalIgnoreCase are the right choice for identifiers, keys, and file names.

Examples

  • string.Compare("apple", "Banana", StringComparison.Ordinal) is positive: 'a' is code 97 and 'B' is 66, so "apple" sorts after.
