magnitude
How big a number is, ignoring its sign or direction -- |x| for a real number, or the length of the arrow for a complex one.
A real number's magnitude |x| is its size with the sign stripped off. A complex number's magnitude |x|=\sqrt{a^2+b^2} is the length of the arrow from the origin to x=a+jb in the complex plane -- the same idea, one dimension up.
