Rebuilding a continuous-time signal from its samples, ideally with an ideal lowpass filter -- what a DAC approximates in real hardware.

Rebuilding a continuous-time signal from a sequence of samples is called reconstruction. Done ideally (Nyquist-Shannon interpolation, an ideal lowpass filter) it recovers the original signal exactly, provided the sampling rate was high enough to avoid aliasing; a real DAC only approximates this.
