The count of diagonal-respecting lattice paths, also counting balanced parentheses and binary tree shapes.

The $n$ th Catalan number $C_n=\dfrac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ counts monotone paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$ that never rise above the diagonal $y=x$ .
