operating system
The software that manages a computer's programs, files and hardware, such as Windows or Linux.
An operating system loads and schedules programs, manages memory and files, and gives programs drivers for hardware. Most microcontroller firmware runs without one; an RTOS is a small scheduler, not a full operating system.
