A small board on a lithium cell that cuts off over-charge, over-discharge and short circuit.

A protection circuit on a lithium cell disconnects it if it is over-charged, over-discharged or shorted, using a protection IC and MOSFET switches. An unprotected cell relies entirely on the rest of the circuit.
