transistor

A semiconductor part that lets a small signal control a larger current; used as a switch or an amplifier.

A transistor has three terminals; a small current (BJT) or voltage (MOSFET) at the control terminal sets how much current flows between the other two. Firmware uses one as a switch so a pin can control a load it can't power.
