conjunctive adverb

An adverb (like however or therefore) that connects two independent clauses, usually after a semicolon.

A conjunctive adverb is an adverb — however, therefore, moreover, consequently, and similar words — that shows the logical relationship between two independent clauses. Because it is an adverb and not a true conjunction, it cannot join two clauses on its own; it needs a semicolon before it and typically a comma after it.

Examples

  • I love spicy tacos; however, I rarely want to eat sushi.
