dangling modifier
A modifying phrase with no target in the sentence at all for it to describe.
A dangling modifier is a modifying phrase — usually a participial phrase — whose intended target is entirely absent from the sentence, so it appears to describe whatever noun happens to sit nearest it instead.
Examples
Exhausted from the shift, the coffee finally kicked in. (coffee cannot be exhausted)
