Punctuation marks enclosing someone's exact spoken or written words, or certain titles.

Quotation marks enclose a direct quotation of someone's exact spoken or written words, or set off the titles of short works; in standard American usage, commas and periods go inside the closing quotation mark.

  • "I'll be there by six," she said.
