slash

The slanted line (/), used in essays mainly to mark line breaks in quoted poetry.

A slash (/) marks the end of a line in poetry quoted within a sentence, with a space on each side. It also separates fractions and dates in informal or technical writing and appears in shortcuts such as and/or, which formal prose usually replaces with words.

Examples

  • Dickinson calls hope "the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul."
