Free public beta until December 4, 2026: every course is open, no card needed. After that, the first chapter of each course stays free and full access is a one-time $39 ($19 for up to 100 founding members chosen for helpful feedback). Your progress is kept. How the beta works

Nyquist rate

A property of a signal: the minimum sampling rate, 2B, the theorem requires for its bandwidth B.

The Nyquist rate of a signal band-limited to B Hz is 2B -- the minimum sampling rate the Nyquist-Shannon theorem requires (strictly exceeded, never merely met) for exact reconstruction. It is a property of the signal itself, computed from its own bandwidth, not of any particular sampling rate chosen to record it. Not to be confused with the Nyquist frequency, a property of a chosen rate instead.

Examples

  • A signal band-limited to B=60 Hz has Nyquist rate 2(60)=120 Hz, regardless of what rate it's actually sampled at.
