rate-distortion function

The fewest bits per source symbol needed to reconstruct it within a given amount of allowed error (distortion).

For a source X\sim p(x) and distortion measure d, the rate-distortion function is the smallest achievable rate R(D) = \min I(X;\hat X) over reconstruction schemes p(\hat x\mid x) with expected distortion E[d(X,\hat X)]\leq D.
