packet

A small chunk of data sent across a network, with a header saying where it's going.

A packet is a unit of data carried by a network, made of headers (addressing and control information for each layer) and a payload.

Examples

  • A reading from the sensor at 192.168.1.37 to the laptop at 192.168.1.10 travels as a packet: a header with both addresses, then the JSON payload.

  • The JSON {"t":21.5,"rh":64} is the payload; everything in front of it in the packet is header.
