publish/subscribe

A messaging pattern where senders publish to a topic and anyone subscribed to it gets a copy, without the two knowing each other.

In publish/subscribe, publishers send messages to named topics on a broker and the broker delivers a copy to every client whose subscription matches, decoupling senders from receivers in space and number.

Examples

  • The sensor publishes its reading under gh/bench1/temp, and a phone app that subscribed to that name gets a copy without knowing the sensor.

  • Adding a fourth program that wants readings is one new subscription, not a new connection to every sensor.
