intermediate operation

A stream step such as filter, map or sorted that returns a new stream and does no work until a terminal operation runs.

A lazy Stream method returning a Stream (filter, map, flatMap, sorted, distinct, limit, skip, peek); stateful ones such as sorted and distinct must see earlier elements.
