scope
The part of a program where a variable's name can be used.
A local variable's scope runs from its declaration to the end of the enclosing block; Java forbids redeclaring a local name that is still in scope.
Examples
A variable declared inside
if (...) { int x = 1; }doesn't exist after the closing brace.
