assistant

The role label for the model's own turns in a chat conversation, as opposed to the user's or the system's.

In a chat-formatted prompt, assistant is the role assigned to messages the model itself generated (or generates next), distinct from user (the human's messages) and system (setup instructions). Most chat templates wrap every turn in one of these three roles.

Examples

  • In a chat log, "assistant: Sure, heres the code" marks that turn as the models own reply.
