encoder
A model component that turns input text into a numeric representation, without generating new text itself.
An encoder maps an input sequence to a numeric representation (a vector or sequence of vectors) that captures its meaning, without itself producing new output tokens -- as opposed to a decoder, which does generate text one token at a time.
Examples
An embedding model is built from an encoder: text goes in, one meaning-vector comes out.
